2022 Arterra Petit Verdot

Winemaker Jason Murray is staking a claim that Petit Verdot is Arterra’s most emblematic wine, but possibly also for the Blue Ridge Mountains and all of Virginia Wines. And you know what, he might be right.

The winery is sustainably farmed and is undergoing organic certification for its granite-soiled vineyard. From the tech notes, it appears there is little to no manipulation in the winery. You could frame this as a “natural” wine and not get much pushback from the wine media and critics.

We tasted this Petit Verdot with some dear friends who were visiting, and formerly lived in Virginia and have some familiarity with the region’s wines. The wine is all black fruit, densely textured, with herbs and toast on the nose. It’s medium acidity, full-bodied, with a long, smooth finish. It was the perfect complement to grilled Dijonaisse chicken breasts, roasted corn, and coleslaw.
