TJ Evans is in charge of Pinot Noir for Domaine Carneros in Los Carneros AVA. For more than 17 years, TJ Evans has shaped the Pinot Noir program at Domaine Carneros in Napa Valley, where he crafts wines that reflect both the elegance of the varietal and the distinct character of the Carneros region. His approach bridges the artistry of still and sparkling winemaking, drawing on the estate’s cool-climate vineyards to produce Pinot Noirs of depth, precision, and longevity. TJ’s philosophy is rooted in expressing place, capturing the interplay of fog, soil, and coastal breeze that defines Carneros, while continuously refining how Pinot Noir can shine across styles.
Before joining Domaine Carneros in 2008, TJ spent a decade exploring the world’s great wine regions. After earning his master’s in enology from UC Davis, he trained at renowned estates including Domaine Jean-Louis Chave in France, Villa Maria in New Zealand, and Viñedos y Bodegas Córpora in Chile. In California, he deepened his passion for Pinot Noir through roles at La Crema in the Russian River Valley and Alderbrook Winery in Dry Creek Valley, following formative experiences at Robert Mondavi and Far Niente. Today, his work at Domaine Carneros continues to honor that global foundation while celebrating the enduring beauty of Carneros-grown Pinot Noir. What’s the ONE THING most unique, authentic, & memorable about your brand?
What sets Domaine Carneros apart is our mastery of two distinct yet equally demanding disciplines: sparkling wine and Pinot Noir. Most wineries specialize in one or the other, but from our inception, we’ve pursued both, at the highest level, entirely from estate fruit. Guests who visit the château in Carneros can experience this rare duality in one sitting: beginning with méthode traditionnelle sparkling wines rooted in Champagne heritage, then moving seamlessly into terroir-driven Pinot Noirs that capture the breezy, clay-soil character of Carneros. That breadth, built from 38 years of farming and family commitment, is our defining characteristic.
Describe how and what you’d do with your winemaking career or winery business if you were not constrained.
If there were no limits, I’d focus on creating a space entirely devoted to the study and appreciation of Pinot Noir – think, part research center, part cellar, part sensory classroom. It would bring together growers, winemakers, and scientists to better understand how this variety expresses itself across sites and seasons.
I’d love to see vineyards from different corners of the world, Carneros among them, grown and vinified under the same conditions, allowing us to explore the role of place with true precision. It wouldn’t be about chasing perfection, but about deepening our understanding of Pinot Noir’s diversity and nuance.
At its heart, the goal would remain simple: to keep learning, to keep refining, and to share that process with others who find the same quiet fascination in how a single grape can tell so many stories.
What is the One Wine most emblematic of your brand and/or winemaking style? Tell us its story.
The Famous Gate Pinot Noir represents our decades-long pursuit of terroir expression. Anchored in Swan clone vines planted in the late 1990s, the blend is a transparent portrait of Carneros, with its windswept slopes and clay-rich soils. The Famous Gate forms the essence of the Pinot Noir program at Domaine Carneros. Read my wine review and food pairing here.
Bonus Question: Why Winemaking?
Winemaking is the intersection of art, science, and stewardship. For me, it’s about translating a place, the fog, the soils, and the breeze of Carneros into something that can be experienced anywhere in the world. A. t Domaine Carneros, I have the privilege of doing this through Pinot Noir, a grape that demands sensitivity and precision yet offers unmatched transparency of terroir.
