Cristián Vallejo, VIK

Cristián Vallejo, VIK

Cristián Vallejo is the Chief Winemaker at VIK in the Cachapoal Valley, Chile. Wine was part of his upbringing, rooted in a family culture where vineyards and daily life were closely linked. Although he initially considered a career in medicine, he ultimately returned to the vineyard, seeing winemaking as a way to interpret place and connect with others.

He began his career in Chile, becoming the first to produce a premium Zinfandel at Viña TerraMater. Seeking broader experience, he worked in Napa Valley, Spain, and northern Italy, refining his approach across different styles and regions.

His time in France was particularly formative. At Château Margaux, he worked alongside leading figures in Bordeaux, developing a focus on precision and balance. Additional experience in Saint-Émilion and with top consultants further shaped his technical and stylistic approach. In 2007, he joined Alex and Carrie Vik in Millahue, where he took on the challenge of developing a new estate defined by diverse soils, exposures, and long-term potential. What’s the ONE THING most unique, authentic, & memorable about your brand?

The most distinctive thing about VIK is that it was born from a question that seemed impossible to answer: can one of the world’s greatest wines be created from scratch?

Unlike many wineries with centuries of family history, VIK began with a bold and uncompromising vision. Alexander and Carrie Vik traveled the world in search of the ideal place to produce world-class wines and found it in Chile’s Millahue Valley, an extraordinary terroir that had remained virtually undiscovered for fine wine production. Millahue means “Place of Gold” in the Mapuche language, and from the very beginning, we felt there was something truly special about this place.

What makes VIK unique is not only the wine itself, but the combination of vision, art, architecture, hospitality, sustainability, and innovation. Everything we do is guided by a simple philosophy: pursuing excellence without accepting traditional limitations.

From our avant-garde winery to our hotel and wine tourism experiences, every decision is made to create something memorable and emotional. We do not follow existing models; we create our own path. This freedom to imagine, experiment, and challenge convention is probably VIK’s most distinctive characteristic.

Describe how and what you’d do with your winemaking career or winery business if you were not constrained.

If there were no limitations of any kind, I would dedicate my life to exploring the still-unknown potential of the world’s great terroirs and gaining a deeper understanding of how nature expresses identity through wine.

I would love to develop projects across different continents, working with exceptional terroirs and bringing together multidisciplinary teams of scientists, artists, farmers, and winemakers. I believe the future of wine depends not only on technique but also on the ability to integrate knowledge, creativity, and sustainability.

I would also invest more resources in research related to climate change adaptation, regenerative agriculture, and technologies that allow us to produce wines of the highest quality with the lowest possible environmental impact.

Above all, however, I would like to bring wine closer to new generations. Wine has an extraordinary ability to connect people, cultures, and stories. My dream would be to help more people discover that richness, regardless of where they live or how much they know about wine.

What is the One Wine most emblematic of your brand and/or winemaking style? Tell us its story.

If one wine defines VIK, it is VIK.

It was conceived as the purest expression of Millahue and remains the clearest statement of the estate’s vision. Early vintages included multiple varieties, but over time the blend has narrowed to Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting a more precise understanding of the terroir.

There is no fixed formula. Each vintage is an interpretation of the site, shaped by ongoing research, parcel selection, and experience.

VIK represents the winery’s core pursuit—balance, structure, and longevity—while capturing the character of Millahue with clarity. In a single glass, it expresses the estate’s identity, evolution, and intent. Read my review and unexpected insights from tasting this wine with Cristián.

Bonus Question: Why Winemaking?

Winemaking attracted me because it combines two worlds that I am deeply passionate about: science and emotion.

Wine requires precision, knowledge, and discipline, yet at the same time it is a cultural expression capable of creating memories, conversations, and unique experiences. Few professions allow you to work so closely with nature while also creating something that connects emotionally with people.

What continues to fascinate me most is that you never stop learning. Every harvest is different, every season presents new challenges, and every wine tells a different story. After many years in this profession, that capacity to surprise me remains intact.

For me, making wine is not simply about producing a beverage. It is about interpreting a place, respecting its identity, and sharing it with the world. That is why I remain deeply in love with this profession.
