2023 Marca Oro “Valdo” Prosecco Brut Rosé

The 2023 “Valdo” is a superiore sparkling wine from Valdobbiadene, Prosecco DOC, in the Veneto, just north of Venice.  This is an easy-going soft summer sipper with a pleasant light-bodied texture and effervescence. It weighs in at only 11% alcohol which is an added bonus in my opinion.

The wine is true to local tradition using primarily Glera grapes and a touch of Pinot Noir. Glera and the Prosecco region are historically tied to Roman times. The reason you haven’t heard much about Glera since 2009 is that the E.U. granted “Prosecco” name protection which supersedes the variety.

There is much to be said for cool climate low-alcohol wines for food pairing. We had this with a mushroom risotto topped with tuna in olive oil and sauteed shrimp. The Valdo is off-dry and contrasts nicely with the brininess of the shrimp and the savoriness of the tuna. The acidity of the wine cut nicely against the creaminess of the risotto. Buona Salute!
