Siegerrebe is a German cool client grape variety related to Gewurtztraminer. Its my understanding that Knapp Winery was the first winery to plant Siegerrebe on the East Coast, and still the only grower east of the Mississippi where you can taste it. It would be fun to visit the Rheinhessen region, southwest of Frankfurt to try the variety in its native place.
Its aromas and flavors are all stone fruit and ripe peach with a hint of honey and an acidity that keeps you coming back for the next taste. This is a very good off-dry full-bodied creamy white wine with a lingering finish, reminiscent of a fine peach tart you may have had over those many holidays.
We paired this wine with spicy chicken enchiladas and a radicchio salad. The wine held its own and enhanced every bite. Sadly, there was no peach tart to compliment our after dinner sips, but a second bottle awaits this season’s holiday dessert pairing.
