This is an excellent example of Vermentino, an Italian white wine grape typically found in Sardinia and Liguria, which grows exceptionally well in the Texas High Plains region. Vineyards received an extra dose of suffering in 2019 due to freezes that paused production for a few years, until now. The weather challenge was resolved in 2023 with a vintage of character and positive results. The 2023 Vermentino is a crisp, citrusy, and fragrant wine with great acidity from fruit grown at high elevation with cool nights.
Wine maker Dave Reilly says that fermentino production began unexpectedly in 2007 with a tiny amount of grapes from one of their growers. Today, Dutchman is considered one of the premier producers of Vermentino in the United States.
