2023 Alta Colina “Old 900” Syrah

I have to say, winemaker Dallas Parnigoni, a Kentucky native, nails this estate Syrah – 98% Syrah and 2% Viognier – a classic partnership. I’m guessing north-facing vineyards come at a premium these days, given global warming and rising alcohol levels. The wine clocks in at 14.6 percent, a major challenge for Paso Robles wine makers. Despite this, the alcohol is not apparent on the nose or palate in this black-fruited, well-crafted wine. The “Old 900” is approachable, with pleasant acidity and integrated tannins. Drink now with the meal below, or hold 4 to 7 years as it develops.

We enjoyed this wine with an Italian Sauce by author Jim Gullo, a writer pal of mine. This classic Southern Italian ragu (don’t ever call it gravy) with penne pasta, sausage, and homemade meatballs pairs perfectly with the Syrah. That’s it. Don’t bother with a salad or other accoutrement; Fill a glass with vino and a bowl with pasta and lots of sauce. Salud!
