2022 Tablas Creek “En Gobelet”

It’s the second day of Hanukkah 2024, and a brisket meal unexpectedly presented itself. This coincided with my pickup of the “En Gobelet” red blend this same afternoon. It appears that Hanukkah wishes can come true as this was a perfect pairing with this unplanned meal. Taking the pairing motif one step further, this blend from the Tablas Creek folks is a unique pairing of Grenache-forward, Mourvedre, Syrah, Counoise, and un petit peu Tannat.

The En Gobelet is all about red fruit, pleasant tartness, baking spices, and food-worthy acidity. It’s a fine wine for pairing at a relatively low (for Paso Robles AVA) alcohol of 14%, and may be one of the most versatile food pairing wines you can find in your local markets.

The French term “En Gobelet” means goblet-shaped and refers to head-trained or shaped vines, versus the more common trellised vineyards you often see in wine country. Jason explains why this Rhone-style blend is emblematic of the Tablas Creek brand. It’s derived from 100% head-trained fruit, which is the viticultural direction in which they are headed as a winery. Dear media friends – a great question to consider – ask Jason why head trained versus trellis growing in Paso Robles. You can read Jason Haas’ interview by clicking here.
