This is a dry red wine made from the Agiorgitiko grape, which is native to the Peloponnese region in the NEMEA PPO. “Medan Agan” means everything in moderation, which was gladly not the case when we visited with founder and winemaker Antonis and his companion George for a tour, lunch, and tasting this past October. We had several vintages of this wine including a 2007 and a 1993, both of which were showing great ageability and maturity. Papantonis only makes two wines, and excels at both – one white, “Metron Ariston”, a blend of Roditis and Charonny, and the Medan Agan red.
The latter is a Peppery and spicy red, medium-bodied with fresh acidity and is well-balanced, and drinking nicely right now. The wine stands on its own or would pair nicely with veal, lamb and pork dishes. We paired it with beef and pork burgers while gazing fondly at the Peloponnese Peninsula from across the Saronic Sea from Aegean Island.
