The La Haute Cuvée proves that Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon from Red Mountain excels. I always worry about hot climate cabs, alcohol, and tannin levels. This is a 97% Cabernet Sauvignon with 3% Petite Verdot, and it’s totally drinkable after only four years, and weighs in at only 13.5%.
The wine is an intense purple-black in the glass and literally smells like Cabernet Sauvignon, i.e. typicity. I get aromas of black fruits, a full body texture, and lingering finish. The cuvee was aged for 28 months in 72% new oak, yet its tannins are surprisingly well integrated.
Kudos to winemaker Sarah Goedhart and the Hedges family team. They produce 100% estate-grown wines that are certified and biodynamic. This is quite an accomplishment. This is an excellent wine and makes a statement about what the Hedges brand is all about. Read Wine Character Sarah’s interview here.
