Texas Tempranillo is not unknown. However, wines like Inwood Estate 2020 “Colos” Tempranillo are destined to bring more attention to Texas wine. In fact, founder Dan Gatlin was one of the pioneers of fine wine in Texas, specifically in growing the Tempranillo grape. They continue to experiment today with yield levels for their three Tempranillos. The Colos label is harvested at only two clusters per vine, and testing indicates higher levels of polyphenols and anthocyanins.
The wine is deep garnet in the glass, with light garnet on the rim. It opens with black fruits, dried figs, and Texas bramble. Winemaker Spencer Gatlin gets a thumbs-up for managing tannins, which are already well integrated despite extended aging of 20 months and the use of 20% new French Oak.
The tech notes suggest opening the wine one day in advance, which couldn’t hurt, but I found it intense yet smooth and drinkable upon opening. I suggest pairing this wine with barbecue, grilled chicken or pork, or a meat marinara-sauced pasta.
