2020 Azhadi “Griffin”

I’ve fallen under the Griffins’ shadow and am happy. It was love at first nose, with peppery, dark earth and dark berry, and waftings of vanilla. How seductive.

I expected nothing less from owner and visionary, Mike Azhadi, with a dash of mystery by chief wine maker Jim Faulkner. This is a very good wine – lush, full-bodied and persistent, with great structure – both fruity and savory with acids in balance. Aged for 33 months on 27% new French and American Oak.

As to the mystery, when asked about the composition of this blend, winemaker Jim states that it’s much like the Griffin itself, a bit of mystery. My guess is Cabernet Sauvignon-driven, with Merlot and perhaps some Petite Verdot, although I suspect a bit of Syrah may be in the mix. Jim?

You can read Mike Azhadi’s interview here, and learn why he chose the mythical Griffin from ancient Persia as the most emblematic wine of the brand.
