This is the first Teran wine that I’ve tasted and attempted to review. I’m delighted and inspired to revisit the Istrian Peninsula in Northern Croatia. I haven’t been there since 2017 and long overdue to return.
Teran is a variety Indigenous to Croatia dating over 650 years. I could have mistaken this for a Garnacha from Central Spain, but something is different – foresty, wild herby, rusticity – I must conclude elementally Croatian. This is 100% Teran from a single vineyard “Flaminio” that Marko grew up in and worked as a young boy, and it makes sense that it’s the flagship for Fakin Winery.
It aged for two years in New Oak (Slovenian?), and I would expect the tannins to be more heavily grained but they are mostly integrated after only 5 years of age. This wine calls for food (although I happily sip it as I type). May I suggest charcuterie board as a starter and lamb burgers or sausages as a main course? This is a well-structured full-bodied wine and I’d rate it very good right now. I believe it is drinking well, and that it will age with grace until at least 2029+.
