2019 Charles Krug “Generations” Red Blend

Charles Krug Winery is a 4th-generation project, now actively run by women, with Angelina Mondavi (Robert’s granddaughter) as the winegrower.

This red blend is opaque in the glass and deep ruby-black in color. It’s a big wine, bursting with dark fruit aromas, full-bodied with a textured mouthfeel. Less a cocktail wine, and more a pairing wine, you’ll want beef, pork, or lamb protein to match. More on our dinner plans below.

“Generations” is a Bordeaux blend – 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, and 6% Malbec. It dates to 1991 and has represented generations of the Mondavi Family since then. The wine aged for 22 months in French oak and shows hints of caramel and vanilla nuances. Although the 15% alcohol is apparent on the nose, it’s well balanced by fruit acid tannin structure.

We paired it with marinated flank steak (soy, honey, rosemary, garlic), and an Italian tomato salad with crusty bread. A match for the generations.
